Since its founding, Costco has always had a focus of putting their employees first. A data point that proves this isn’t just a leadership talking point can be seen in Costco’s turnover rates. 

For employees who have worked at the company for more than one year, the annual turnover rate is below 6% compared to the retail industry average of over 60% in 2021. 

According to their CEO, one reason that Costco has been able to achieve such low turnover rates and increase the wages of employees is because of the value each employee brings to the business through their ideas and suggestions.

$100 Million in Projected Annual Savings from Employee Ideas

Costco’s employee suggestion program is highly effective and results in substantial annual savings. It is projected that the company saves approximately $100 million per year from ideas and improvements suggested by its employees. 

Although $100 million in savings for a company the size of Costco, who boasted $242 billion in revenue for 2023 may not seem significant, drilling down to their operating margin tells us a different story. 

Costco’s operating margin for 2023 was $8.114 billion. When we apply the projected ROI of employee ideas annually to this figure, it represents a 1.23% improvement to Costco’s operating margin!

  • Square Cashew Containers: An employee suggested switching the cashew containers from round to square. This change optimized packaging space and reduced the number of truckloads needed for shipping, saving the company 560 truckloads annually​. 
  • Energy-Efficient Lighting: Another suggestion involved replacing traditional lighting with energy-efficient LED lights in Costco warehouses. This not only lowered electricity consumption but also reduced maintenance costs due to the longer lifespan of LED lights​. 
  • Automated Inventory Replenishment: Employees recommended the use of automated systems for inventory replenishment. This technology streamlined restocking processes, minimized out-of-stock situations, and reduced waste​. 

Best Practices You Can Learn from the Success of Costco’s Employee Suggestion Program

There are several best practices that Costco has implemented with their frontline suggestion program which are common traits we see at Ideawake that successful employee suggestion programs –
